Art of Haiti

When you mention the word "Haiti" you cannot help but think about art. It is found in the most captivating, colorful and meaningful art made between the twin poles of anxiety and struggle that are the current condition in present day in Haiti. Nestled in the midst of the trade winds and shipping lanes of the Caribbean Sea, Haiti has long been a cauldron of emotions, emotions that come to life in the art of the island.

Ever since Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 and found thriving communities of Taino Indians, with their unique sculpture, Haiti has been a source of inspiration for artists. From the early Spanish colonialists to the free Haitians of the 19th century to the struggles going on today, art in Haiti has thrived. Today, even as the economy struggles, art blossoms, as you will see from the wonderful work represented here. In my travels to Haiti and in my interaction with the artists, I have found much work of high value, geared around their culture, lives and experiences today. And while those experiences might be far different from yours, I think you will find something of common value in these paintings.
